Is West Really Best?

STAN, JACKSON & WHYI
LOVE THE EAST COAST!

30 years ago, in my American Junior Golf Association days, our biggest team event of the year was the Cannon Cup: East vs. West. Texas kids were somehow assigned to the “West” team. As Texans, we really just wanted to be our own team, but that’s beside the point. Texas observes Central Time, which appears to be the ideal part of the country to live in. 12 noon NFL games, and 7pm prime time. Yes, Good Morning America, with Joan Lunden, was tape delayed, but I didn’t know that growing up; Alexa hadn’t been “born” yet!

When I was young, my parents and I took a lot of road trips, mainly headed to Wisconsin, by way of Joplin, MO. We enjoyed listening to the Rangers until the signal faded. For my hockey friends, I’m talking about the Texas Rangers; Nolan Ryan, Pudge Rodriguez, and, of course, George Bush. Pops Harvey loved these road trips; it reminded him of his childhood, going to sleep listening to the San Francisco Seals. There’s just something special about listening to or watching live sports.

Fast forward to 2025. Like many of my friends with teens, we spend countless weekends traversing the East Coast, shuttling our athletes to various sporting events. It’s an egregious overspend of money and time, but that’s beside the point, too. The memories made are special and will last forever.
Every event that we attend seems to be within “driving” distance. It’s almost impossible to comprehend what a “central” location Winston- Salem really is. Just 4 hours to Charleston? Yep. 3.5 hours to Richmond? 5-6 hours to DC, and 6.5 to Delaware? Can’t leave out my lacrosse parents! Within a day’s drive, you can get all the way to

Orlando, Nashville, or even up to New York City and Hartford, CT. In case I forget, please remind me not to drive across the GW bridge again, ever. At least not on a Friday at 6pm.

Y’all know, we’re Furies; undefeated season this year for HK and the MS girls’ soccer team, and a state championship for Brady and the lacrosse boys! And we’re Deacons. I have a couple of ACC Women’s golf championship rings!

We drive up and down the East Coast, for soccer, basketball, and lacrosse, and our rides are easy when we can listen to Wake games called by the Voice of the Deacs, Stan Cotten. Stan is in year 27 as the voice of the Deacs, and is a calming presence when we need a 3rd down stop or a rebound!

On Fury game nights, we eagerly hope that our friend Jackson is calling the games on NFHS or Instagram. Soccer, basketball, or lacrosse, we appreciate Jackson’s coverage of the Furies! We’re listening, and we are grateful for you. Although the Furies are losing Jackson to graduation, we know he will thrive at NC State!

Last Labor Day, Brady and I trekked to Palo Alto to see the Frogs beat Stanford and to see great friends. Kickoff is at breakfast; jet lag makes the late games hard to watch. Maria Bartiromo is off the air before our alarm goes off. The Cali views are beautiful, and we miss our friends dearly. But, we’ll stay on the East Coast, where we can listen to Jackson and Stan in real time. Go Furies! Go Deacs!

Cheers to summer schedules and lots of sweat!
