WHY I AM EXCITED ABOUT THE GROUNDS AND WHY YOU SHOULD BE TOO!

Long before the Last Resort, there was Ziggy’s, and Baity’s, and
Corbin’s (of course) my favorite:) And yes, this was back in the days of
Groves Stadium and old press box, and long before the
Winston-Salem Open, the walking Deacon, and decades before the
swinging Deacon! Although all of these fine establishments are long
gone, our red ruddy rhenish is still filled to the brim. Ahem.
With the end of baseball season, I find myself driving down University
Parkway weekly to check on progress of The Grounds. Need another
excuse to drive by? Goodwill is always accepting donations! Your
closet will thank you.
The Grounds, with a 100-acre footprint in 27105, is estimated to cost
$500+ million, once the long term plans are complete. The project is
exciting, somewhat speculative, and, some might say, risky. For those
of us who reside in Deactown, it also has the potential to transform a
zip code, and ultimately give us our identity back.
27105 is the home of Smith Reynolds Airport, and Forsyth Tech
Transportation Technology Center and Forsyth Tech Mazie S.
Woodruff Aviation Technology Lab. Purple Crow and Second Harvest
Food Bank of NWNC have recently invested in the Whitaker Park area,
just north of the Grounds. 27105 has a poverty rate of 27%, and
borders 27104: the wealthiest area of Winston-Salem.

WHY WE ARE EXCITED:

  • The Grounds will take housing units in the
area from 170 to 424! Just 6 years ago,
before Lofts at Whitaker Park, there were
zero housing units in this area.
  • Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is
    planning to open a freestanding
    emergency department across the street
    from The Grounds project.
  • 600 direct net new jobs, and $1.3 billion of economic impact- per Coleman Team of Front Street Capital.

While I’m hopeful for a bike rack, and a Deacon Shop, featuring Johnny, Peter, Lulu, and Tommy, I am most
excited for the opportunity afforded to ALL of us.
Jobs. Housing. Shopping. Office Space. Increased
tax base = better schools, updated infrastructure,
and ultimately an enhanced quality of life.

The transformation of University Pkwy, from Coliseum to Polo Road, will be a historical turning point for Winston-Salem.
Winston-Salem, “corporate” has done it’s job. Now, it is our turn. Thank you to Front Street Capital, and Mother so Dear, for
betting on Winston-Salem. We understand the assignment.

Go Deacs!
